THE BASEBALL DIARIES

My friend Erik went to Tuesday's Cubs win at Houston and took pictures with his fancy new camera. I'll praise the camera for its solid hues and terrific representation (in black and white, particularly) of light and shadow, but the real star is Erik's framing, eye for magnitude, and how easily he captures what Japanese designers call the "Golden Center."

A great example of Erik's Golden center is in the first photo, below. Amid the wide-angle detail, the depth of focus, innumerable seats and small bodies, only one thing stands out: two players having a conversation at the edge of the field, cupped by a thin line of pre-show fans. Looks like a motion picture still. Excellent, one of my favorites.

Instead of blathering on, I'll let Erik's photos speak for themselves. Enjoy!
